          History

Discovered in 1808 by Joseph-Louis Gay-Lussac and L.J. Thenard in Paris, France and by Sir Humphrey Davy in London, England.  The name is derived from "buraq", the Arabic word for borax

          Uses
  • Amorphous Boron used in pyrotechnics for distinctive green color.
  • Filaments used in optics.
  • Used in steel making to increase hardenability without adverse effects to ductility, formability, and machinability in annealed steels.
  • B10 isotope used in neutron-absorbing radiation shielding.
