          History

Carbon's existence has been know since prehistoric times.  The name is derived from the Latin word "carbo", which means charcoal.

          Uses
  • Graphite used as lubricant.
  • Coal used as fuel.
  • C14 isotope used for archeological dating.
  • Used in steel making as the principal hardening element of steels due to increased tensile strength, hardness, and abrasion/wear resistance.  Adverse effects include lowered ductility, toughness, and machinability.
