GENERAL INFO
          History

Discovered in 1801 by Charles Hatchett in London, England.  Originally named Columbium, the official name is derived from "Niobe", the daughter of Tantalus in Greek mythology.

          Uses
  • Used in the manufacture magnets.  Also used in alloys to make superconductive magnets.
  • Used in steel making to improve strength and impact toughness. Also lowers transition temperature and may decrease hardenability.
