GENERAL INFO
          History

Discovered in 1669 by Hennig Brandt in Hamburg, Germany.  The name is derived from "phosphoros", the Greek word meaning bringer of light.

          Uses
  • Used in pyrotechnic and ordnance manufacturing.
  • Phosphates used in fertilizers, pesticides, and cleaning agents.
  • Used in steel making to increase strength and hardness but lowers ductility and toughness.  Can improve machinability if levels are controlled properly.
