GENERAL INFO
          History

Discovered in 1783 by Juan Jose and Fausto Elhuijar in Vergara, Spain.  The name is derived from the Swedish words "tung sten" meaning heavy stone".  The symbol W originates from the mineral wolframite.

          Uses
  • Used in electrical and electronic filaments, elements, and contacts.
  • Carbide is used extensively for wear resistance in mining, metal working, and petroleum industries.
  • Salts used in chemical and tanning industries.
  • Sulfide is used as high temperature lubricant.
  • Tungstates used in fluorescent lighting.
  • Used in steel making to increase toughness, hardness, and hot strength.  Also improves high temperature wear resistance.
