GENERAL INFO
          History

Discovered in 1789 by Martin Heinrich Klaproth in Berlin, Germany.  The name is derived from the Arabic word "zargun" meaning gold color.

          Uses
  • Used in alloys to make superconducter magnets.  Also used for high corrosion resistance.
  • Oxide used to manufacture refractory.
  • Used in steel making to increase toughness in high-strength low alloy steels by controlling the shape of inclusions.  Also deoxidizes steels.
FORMS
          Typical
          Pure forms: Zirconium compounds:
  • Primary Zirconium
